Monday March 31th, 2008

Good morning!! No, you’re not dreaming….we’re in paradise!!

7:00 AM Meet in lobby for short walk to breakfast. Breakfast served at Kapiolani Park. Bring sunscreen, bottled water, and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Today we will divide into 2 groups (A & B) as we head into Diamond Head Crater. Two or three buses at a time will pick up groups from Kapiolani Park Bandstand parking lot.

Start stretching and grab your sunscreen as we prepare to hike about 3/4 of a mile to the 760-foot summit of the most recognized mountain in the world - Diamond Head Crater! This famous landmark wasn’t always called Diamond Head. Native Hawaiians referred to this famous landmark as Mount Leahi (Lee-AH-hee). The trail that we’ll be hiking today was built in 1910 to serve as a military observation station along the rim of the crater. The 360-degree view at the top of the mountain made Diamond Head Crater strategically beneficial. Bring your camera! Below, we'll see the lighthouse, coral reefs, sailboats, and even surfers on the waves at Diamond Head Beach!

8:30 AM GROUP A departs for Diamond Head Crater.

9:15 AM GROUP B departs for Diamond Head Crater.

10:30 AM GROUP A returns to hotel.

11:15 AM GROUP B returns to hotel.

Lunch on your own at nearby Waikiki restaurants (McDonalds, Burger King, Denny’s, Wolfgang Puck’s, etc.).

12:30 PM Board buses for transfer to Whale Watch / Dance Cruise.

1:00 PM Enjoy Whale Watch / DJ Dance Cruise along Waikiki Coast! This is the end of the whale season, but hopefully we’ll see whales as we enjoy the coast of Waikiki as we dance!

3:30 PM Return to hotel.

5:45 PM Meet in lobby for a walk through Waikiki.

6:00 PM We’ll be dining with our favorite celebrities this evening. Okay, not really, but it’s the next best thing! We’ll be taking a short walk to Planet Hollywood for some “ono grinds” (good food), music, and movies.

10:00 PM Room check.

10:30 PM Lights out!

Tuesday April 1, 2008

Students must wear “uniform aloha shirts”, khaki shorts/capris and white tennis shoes today for performance later in the day. Load instruments on bus.

6:00 AM Buffet Breakfast served at Perry’s Smorgy.

8:00 AM Meet in lobby for transfer to Hilo Hattie’s Hawaiian Garment Factory. Get your wallets out for some of the best native shopping in the islands. This is where you can buy those quality matching Aloha shirts and Muu muus to wear to the Luau!

9:30 AM Board Buses for transfer to Pearl Harbor.

11:00 AM Performance time! You are officially part of history! Professional photo to be taken after performance.

After our performance we will have lunch (catered box lunch to be served at Pearl Harbor) and tour the Bowfin Visitor Center. We’ll go below deck to wind our way through the barrow compartments where the Bowfin’s crew worked, ate and slept through nine harrowing war patrols. You will learn about the Bowfin, which served with great distinction on WWII and earned her nickname “The Pearl Avenger”.

We continue our blast from the past to Pearl Harbor’s U.S.S. Arizona Memorial to see where history was made. We will experience the film “Pearl Harbor Story”, the visitor center museum, boarding a Navy launch and entering the memorial. We will witness the actual sunken hull where over 1,000 servicemen were entombed during the December 7, 1941 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

Wednesday April 2, 2008

8:00 AM Breakfast served at Kapoilani Park.

11:00 AM We'll board bus for a scenic trip to the Nuuanu Pali Lookout, a half-mile past the Queen Emma Summer Palace.

We'll drive through a canopy of trees overhead draped with hanging vines and philodendrons. In 1795 King Kamehameha routed O'ahu's warriors up the trail during his invasion of the island. Warriors were forced over the cliffs. Today's itinerary will include a North Shore Tour where surfing daredevils gather from around the world to compete riding the monster waves that are often taller than most buildings. Depending on the season, we may be able to catch a few surfers in action. Sunset Beach is the local favorite and is legendary for its 20-foot waves. The North Shore is also the home of the famous Banzai Pipeline. "Banzai" is used as a toast or a battle cry meaning "go for it". In the 1950's a surfer yelled, "Banzai" as he rode a massive wave and the name stuck. When the ocean hits the shallow coral shelf offshore, a wave forms that is so steep that it rolls and makes a nearly perfect tube or pipeline. It is the holy grail of surf challenges. Don't worry, we'll just watch for today.

12:30 PM Shake hands with Tongans, dance the hula with a Tahitian, or learn how to make fire with sticks and coconuts from a Samoan. Experience a cultural awakening at the Polynesian Cultural Center. See why this is the #1 visitor attraction in the Islands. Includes Daytime Activities & IMAX Theater. Lunch on your own at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

4:30 PM Board buses for transfer to Waimea Beach Park for dinner Hawaiian Style!

6:00 PM Board buses for return to hotel.

7:00 PM Arrive at hotel. Free time to enjoy beach a leisurely walk down the beach or shopping at a local surf shop.

10:00 PM Room check.

10:30 PM Lights out!

Thursday April 3, 2008

6:00 – 9:30 AM Buffet Breakfast served at Perry’s Smorgy.

Today we’ll snorkel at on of the most beautiful spots our Planet Earth has to offer! Hanauma Bay is a protected wildlife refuge where fish will actually swim up and eat out of your hands, and we’re not talking minnows! You may even be able to see a sea turtle or two. This bay, cradled in an old volcanic crater, is an underwater metropolis that can’t be described so don’t forget your underwater camera! The conditions are excellent for snorkeling and the beach holds its own with its fine, golden sand. So put on your mask and enter a new world!

Due to certain park restrictions, we’ll need to travel in small groups. The times are as follows below. Often the earliest times offer the best conditions (better underwater visibility and less crowded). We’ll sign up for times when we get to Hawaii. This is a preliminary schedule and is thus subject to change.

6:30 AM Group 1 board vans to depart hotel 10:15 AM Return to hotel

7:45 AM Group 2 board vans to depart hotel 11:15 AM Return to hotel

9:00 AM Group 3 board vans to depart hotel 12:15 PM Return to hotel

10:15 AM Group 4 board vans to depart hotel 1:15 PM Return to hotel

11:30 AM Group 5 board vans to depart hotel 2:15 PM Return to hotel

Lunch on your own today.

4:30 PM Go Native! Become a part of “America’s Best Luau” as filmed by ABC’s Good Morning America. Feel like “one of the family” at Germaine’s Luau as you learn to dance the popular Hukilau hula. The private-beachfront grounds give this venue its “relaxed, backyard style” atmosphere. Dancers arrive by outrigger canoe to begin the evening’s entertainment. See crowd pleasers such as fire dancers and Tahitian dancing. (You may even have an opportunity to get into the limelight by being asked on the stage.) Help yourself to a 16-item, ALL YOU CAN EAT buffet of traditional Island dishes and continental cuisine (for you less adventurous eaters).

10:30 PM Return to hotel. Room check immediately upon return to hotel.

11:00 PM Lights out!
